This does not sound new to any of you. The ZERO-PERIOD system is used many a time in our school due to various reasons events and tests like the exhibition, cycle tests etc. And during these times, the students not involved in the concerning activities are seen completing their homework. Most of those who cannot finish homework at home, or need to study for extra tests in school are genuine. This period, other than the assembly, can also be given to the students to meet various teachers have various meetings so that they can enjoy their recess to their fullest. This system is common in many CBSE schools. Should this system be introduced in ISM too? What do you think about it?

Hey once again.

Now. Zero periods. Yes we are familiar with them. And I for one, am totally for the introduction of zero periods in schools. It is a great help. Most of the students use it to catch up on hw and study for tests, as you rightly said. But many kids do also go chit chat wid their frnds. These 0 periods are also a good time for student-teacher rendezvous. Theres not much u can say here. And as far as I no, quite a majority of ppl are for zero periods.

yes definitely.......

it wud b really good for the students......

i mean.... it cud help the students to catch wid their hw n other things.........esp in 12th.... v hav no time at home coz of the usual tests n thn thers the worksheets n all.....

but the only prob s tat.......... there r some teachers ( wudnt want to name them )..... who often take up zero periods to teach........i can understand if we are lagging behind the portion or sumthing............. but then to sit thru 2 -3 or even 4 periods of physics or chemistry can really b tiring......( ya in 12th v do hav double n at times triple periods of chem n phy )....

so the purpose of zero period shud b made clear to evry1...

n its a good pt....tat meetings wid teachers n all cud b done during this period........... rather than wasting ur recess......

so i hope the school considers it ....

Zero periods. Great idea. But are the students gonna use it well? Are the teachers gonna not use it as teaching periods? Maybe if the skl can balance all that then it’s a great idea. Because it would relax our schedules a wee bit. I mean otherwise skl seems to pass in a haze of tests and hw and meetings and duties. We could do with a zero period for sure. But the rules about what the students are allowed to do during these periods need 2 b laid down rite from the start. Otherwise the idea may go sour. And Varun I think the idea of having a teacher post is great. Mr. Terrance would be a great choice I think. Anyways try for some of the teachers. I am sure they would b interested.

Ps:yeah ppl thanx for standing up for the council and for those who dissed us, well im sorry if we’ve let u down. But we’re trying.

ZERO PERIODS ARE THOSE PERIODS THAT MOST OF US CHERISH. WHY DO WE LIKE THE O-PERIODS. IS IT BECAUSE WE GET TO DO OUR HOMEWORK OR IS IT BECAUSE WE GET TIME TO SOLVE OUR DOUBTS. WELL I LOVED IT BECAUSE I GOT TIME TO CHIT-CHAT WITH MY FRIENDS WHICH I WOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO DURING THE NORMAL SCHOOL HOURS AND RECESSES AR OUT OF QUESTION BECAUSE SOMETIMES WE HAVE SOME OTHER ERRANDS TO COMPLETE. WE ALL NEED JUST 15 MINUTES TO TALK WITH OUR FRIENDS. THE ZERO PERIODS THAT WE HAVE NOW ARE VERY SHORT AND A LOT OF TIME GOES IN TAKING ATTENDANCE AND MAKING THE LIST OF ABSENTEES.

I KNOW MANY OF US ARE IN FAVOUR OF O-PERIODS SO VARUN WHY DONT YOU SPEAK TO THE VICE PRINCIPAL ABOUT IT?

hmmmm... i remember zero periods...exhibition time. it was fun! i used to hang out with all my friends. but dont u think, if zero periods are reestablished, that teachers wont let us go out of class? not much fun 4 people lyk me who cant catch up with friends from other classes. but otherwise its an excellent idea.  i do think we shud get mr terrence or miss kalyani to post out here.

excuse me, guys?u want zero periods to catch up wid friends?

din't we all see what happened when the zero periods were introduced for exhibition?

all the students whether involved in the exhibition or not were seen milling around the corridors , playing, and running around.hell broke loose and discipline level came down to almost nil.

i think that zero periods are gr8 for completing hw, studying for tests or just talking wid friends INSIDE the classrooms. student-teacher rendezvous mite not work out as the staff room may end up having more students than teachers(genuine and emergency cases can be accepted.)

so i think that zero periods should be introduced in school if the r gonna b used well.

0 PERIODS FOR CATCHIN UP WID FRIENDZ????? wat nonsense. datz certainly not gud. !!! ane wayz zero periods are ideal for cathchin up wid Homework but itz quite unnecassary to have them without ane specific reason. the Exhibition time wuz one gud reason but i felt it wuz unnecasary as it only caused havoc. adn da guyz who all the marveloous projects put up cud have done it at home or sum other time for examples stay back at skool on thursdays.

anewayz dats wat i think..... many out dare to oppose me!!!

hi dudes

0 periods r introduced during cycle tests and before exhibition. these periods are to be used for some useful work and not for loitering around. if one wants to do that it can be done outside skool.skool has its own rules and regulations to be followed.

wat is the purpose of comin to skool is ragging teachers or for bunking classes. no , it is for us to learn and obtain knowledge. people r there to bunk classes unnecessarily. wat is the fun in bunking.if one can pay attention in class wat is the need of tutz.

we need 0 periods if one utilizes fruitfully. if it is used for bunkin and time pass . let us not implement it .

The purpose of zero-periods is the most important factor of our choice in having them or not. Most of the time, zero-periods were created to allow kids to practice for upcoming events (like the science fair, or sport events). I'm going to talk about a couple of other factors because the purpose of zero-periods is something the school administration has to think about. Plus, the purpose keeps changing from time to time (unless it's always for doing homework -- for avoiding stress at home).

First, it's the attitude of the majority in our school. Most of us think of zero-periods as having fun. That view cannot be judged; simply because no one's to blame here. The original purpose of the zero-periods is ignored. For instance, while the preparations for the science fair were going on, I saw so many kids hanging out (often reasoning it as a consequence of some kind of "delay" or "temporary problem"). It's not entirely wrong. However, it would be a better idea to finish the work as fast as possible and then allocate 10-15 minutes completely for a treat. That avoids the convergence of work and play -- which is a skill everyone has to learn (and that's what school is about). The point here is that until our attitudes are directed in a positive direction, I don't think zero-periods would be entirely recommended.

Second comes its viability. Is it really possible to have zero-periods everyday? Will it still maintain schedules and avoid conflict? Will it all work out without wasting time? Will the idea succeed in providing anything better than what we do as of now? And what about the periods? Should we increase the period timings or crunch them more? The latter wouldn't be a good idea in terms of practicality. How are you really going to know if the task to be completed was actually completed within the time frame of the zero-period or elsewhere?

In terms of practicality, it doesn't really seem a good idea if the task at hand will still not be completed. It will also probably cause more confusion (in terms of scheduling). It could all be possible with a little more of planning in terms of practicality and necessity.

im a new member of this fad started by varun and i think its a wonderful idea.

bout da zero periods, personally i feel that although maybe outta a 100 students only bout 15-20 will utilise this zero period properly n the others who r like me will chill. im sure that most of us durin da time of the science exhibition saw loads of chaos in da corridoors. let us think bout da teachers n of course da council membas who will hav 2 be on duty n  nywayz bout home work i feel it should b done @ "home". any1 dyin 2 hav rendevous wid teachers shld do it in the recesses if theyre hell bent on spendin time wid teachers.

but, all in all im neither in favour nor against it but feel that it is just not necessary right now.

p.s: bout da livestrong bands as far as i know no council member wears it . n we do not enjoy confisticatin stuff iv neva done so till now but yea if ppl wanna get it confisticated n do not care bout the rules laid down by da skool, we will confisticate the bands even if the toll rises to a billion.  thanx varun for siddin wid us

After a lot of people have told me to change the topic, let me tell you that this topic is presently at a state of pause because Examinations are going on and I cannot stop this topic until the next topic is ready. So let this just stay, if you'll want to post, you'll are welcome, or else, bear with me

The next topic will be introduced on the 20th after exams are up.

Sorry for the delay but keep posting.

Webmaster

P.S. - GOOD NEWS! FROM THE NEXT DISCUSSION, TEACHERS WILL ALSO POST THEIR VIEWS ON THE TOPICS. SO VIEWS CAN BE BALANCED AND WE CAN SEE FROM THE OTHER PERSPECTIVE.

WEBMASTERS VERDICT

Hey WhatsUpISM members,

I really long discussion. Went much longer than expected. As youll know, during exams people don't come and post their views and that is why, it had to be paused. But a good, descent discussion.

deadlydivs gave a start to the topic with her views. And so she gave a beginning to the "YES" formula. And so everybody had their reasons for wanting 0 periods. Not to forget, many posts also were aginst zero periods and found it waste of time for those who dont need it. But does this mean that these zero periods will be introduced only fo few people and not for all. Very obviously, impractical. Yes Supergal, it is completely true that teachers should not teach during the zero periods to complete the portion. It has been discussed with the authorities, and they too agree. It is not right on teachers' part to teach. But the teachers are also pressurized to complete their portion. But anyways, if introduced, they will not teach.

So do you think people will utilize zero periods well. Well, this can only be clear once they are introduced on a regular basis. If not introduced in usual time table, it surely can be introduced during the ending months of the year when the pressure on students is enormous and teachers want the students to attend the classes.

The school may say, that we will introduce them only at the time of functions or events. So teachers tell one one thing, at which point of the year is ISM not preparing for an event? I accept all thing that Azure said, but also want to add that only when it is implemented, can we know how it works? Will students watse time or will teachers be able to keep them in control and keep things going smoothly.

Loads of work, tutions, homework, activites etc. and no time for many things. And that is undoubtedlt the motive. And obviously, a teacher does hate it when while teaching, students are called out for some instruction or work. In those terms, 0 periods would be great idea. I agree that the two recess system has been introduced, but bhow much work can one do in 35 minutes. And most of the teachers destroy our and their recesses by calling us and making us occupied in some or the other work. And everyitme we are seen outside class doing some work, the teachers say "you should have done this in recess". I am sorry teachers, but students are not responsible. And obviously, we cannot start a day with sitting perfectly straight, though sleepy in front of our teachers.

I do not know if any of you has thought on these lines as an advantage. Whether 0 periods are introduced or not, teachers will continue to borrow periods to complete portion. And so we often end up losing P.T. or Labs. So only if really urgent, they should be allowed to take the periods.

I have talked to senior authorities regarding this and let us wait and watch what result we get and what is the outcome.

Regards,

Varun Arora
